Born and Raised – John Mayer Album art

Craftsmanship isn’t dead it’s just living inside of David A. Smith’s workshop. My jaw dropped when I saw the painstaking details he puts into each and everyone of his amazing pieces of work. Jiro’s met his match in terms of love of craft I think.

Details from Vimeo – David A. Smith is a traditional sign-writer/designer specialising in high-quality ornamental hand-crafted reverse glass signs and decorative silvered and gilded mirrors. David recently produced a wonderful turn-of-the-century, trade-card styled album cover for popular American singer/songwriter John Mayer.

This film captures the ‘Behind The Scenes’ creation of the ‘Born & Raised’ and ‘Queen of California’ artwork, as well as 2 unique reverse glass panels, hand-crafted in England by David A. Smith.

30 for 30 did a fantastic documentary about Bo Jackson. As I was watching the documentary, the design fanboy in me found myself taking screen shots of the illustrations and typography. After the doc I had to find out who the hell was behind these amazing illustrations and designs. The illustrator is a familiar Grantland contributor Mick Duzyj and the Agency is Doubleday & Cartwright.

Also for you Tecmo Bowl fans out there I took a screen shot of the famous Bo Jackson touchdown screen as well. Someone needs to make a T-shirt of this.

Back to the start

The music from this is so good. Willey Nelson, it’s dead on and it fits tone of the film so well. Well done Johnny Kelly. Well done Chipotle. A film like this tells the ethos of a company so well.

The making of this film is even more impressive.
